How To Start A Home Yoga Practice

We are often told that to have a yoga practice at home, you need a quiet space with incense, candles, and soft lighting.

Guess what- for a yoga practice at home you don’t need all that generic advice. Instead, let’s talk about what you really need for practicing yoga at home!

To goal here is to be realistic and discuss how to make your yoga practice work for YOU without trying to fit into a generic and unhelpful standard of what yoga is.

At Home Yoga Set-Up

It is super helpful to have a planned space in which to practice yoga. Keep the place where you practice yoga as simple as possible. Too many things can be distracting and make it hard to focus.

If possible, set up your practice space somewhere with good natural light and ventilation.

I understand that is not always possible. I have practiced in a tiny New York City apartment with two cats on my mat and zero natural light. But do what you can with your space, and know that all the regurgitated advice about a calm atmosphere and having a lot of space is unrealistic for most of us.

You can STILL practice yoga at home even if you do not have tons of space.

Please don’t believe the usual yoga advice that you need a spacious area with plenty of room.

Part of building a yoga practice at home is adapting and adjusting to what you have at the moment.
